Have you ever gone the wrong direction? Have you ever wondered how to get back on the right track? You are not alone.

God told Jonah to go one way, but he went the opposite. In love, God chased Jonah with a storm and through the sea to call him back to Himself. Although a familiar Bible story, Jonah’s life and ministry has much to teach those who are willing to learn.

Dr. Kiehn traces the story of Jonah to reveal how much there is of Jonah in all of us. Learn how fear, anger, and the sovereignty of God works to reveal our need and the way for salvation.

The Household of the Living God

As God’s family, the church, should order its lives in a particular way. Paul writes to young pastor Timothy so that he “may know how one ought to behave in the household of God, which is the church of the living God, a pillar and buttress of the truth.” (1 Timothy 3:15) This book will encourage and challenge you to behave in a manner that is fitting for God’s family, the household of the living God. May your love for God and for His family, the church, grow in knowledge and depth of insight so that you may be able to discern what is best and be filled with the fruit of righteousness until the day of Christ Jesus.

What would the Lord say to encourage and strengthen the resolve of persecuted believers who were in constant fear of their future? We do not have to wonder because God has already spoken. The book of Revelation was written to strengthen and encourage the hearts of believers facing intense persecution in the first century. John’s Revelation can be an enigma for Christians. There are some who are fascinated by the prophecy and symbolism in Revelation and spend most of their Bible study trying to discover the hidden meaning of the book. There are others that ignore the book altogether because of the mystery that lies in its message and how confusing and challenging the message appears. Most Christians are terrified to read or teach through it because various Christians hold to so many different interpretations and strong convictions about the book. And yet, God wants us to read, study, and meditate on this book because it is part of his holy, precious, and perfect Word. As you approach this book, I hope you understand that Revelation was written to encourage and strengthen our faith in Jesus Christ. As you study through Revelation let your heart would be resolved to follow hard after Christ. Let this book be no longer an enigma, but a glorious, profound source of hope in the midst of trials.

Life is full of big questions. What is love? Does God hate? Whom will God save? Can my opinions be wrong? Will there be justice? People have been going to the Bible to answer life’s big questions for centuries, but rarely do they first go to the Minor Prophets. Through a series of biblical exhortations, Pastor David Kiehn will show that sometimes life’s most important questions are answered in unlikely places. Come along for a walk through the Minor Prophets to answer some of life’s “major” questions.

In 2014, our church worked through the New City Catechism. Each work I wrote a devotion based on the Scripture text for the week to help meditate and clarify the truth expounded in the text. The goal was for each family to read the devotion together during the week and to practice memorizing the catechism question. I would love to share our experience as a church body with those of you holding this book. There is a short devotion followed by memory work for each week including a Bible verse, Bible knowledge and a catechism question. I decided to use the New City Catechism because it is broken down to 52 weeks which makes it perfect for a family devotion. It also has online resources at www.newcitycatechism.com as well as an Ipad app to help provide additional background information. (The “A” under the stands for the adult version while the “C” stands for the child’s version. Use whichever you think is best for your family.) My prayer is that using this systematic devotional your family will grow in their understanding the basics of the Christian faith and the regular discipline of family devotions and memorization will bear spiritual fruit for years to come.

One American writer has said, “The truth is an arbitrary, shifting, culturally molded phenomenon.” Is he right? Is truth arbitrary? Is it shifting? Is truth a culturally developed modern construction? Or is truth transcendent? Is it ultimate? Is it above time and space? Jesus said that if his disciples abide in his word they, “will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” How do you know if you are in the truth or that the truth is in you? Pastor Dave Kiehn walks you through the Apostles John’s brief letters to the church to help you discover if you are in the truth and how to remain in that truth. The truth has the power to make you free. And if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed. Explore John’s letters and find freedom in the truth.

You can learn a lot about someone when they face death. We can learn a lot about Jesus Christ as he faced the last days of his life. The innocent Son of God was heading to take the wrath of God on the cross for the salvation of sinners. Jesus rode into Jerusalem as a king only to be killed as a criminal; and yet, he—for the joy that was set before him—endured the cross. Jesus showed us how to live for the glory of God in all things. Jesus showed us how to care for others even when our life is ending. Jesus showed us how to die in faith of the resurrection of the life to come. Jesus shows us what really matters in life.

I pray as you read this book you will see what truly matters in this life; I pray that you will learn how to live and die well for the glory of God; and I pray that you will learn a lot about Jesus Christ and what matters most to him. May the innocent Son of God give you peace and teach you joy through his last days.

Every Christian is called to build their foundation on the Lord Jesus Christ. Paul writes to the church at Corinth, “According to the grace of God given to me, like a skilled master builder I laid a foundation, and someone else is building upon it. Let each one take care how he builds upon it. For no one can lay a foundation other than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ.” (1 Corinthians 3:10-11) The earliest foundation of the gospel of Jesus Christ was laid out in the opening pages of the Bible in its first book. Genesis provides the foundation of God’s people by showing how the gracious, almighty Sovereign Lord God created the world and loving set his affection on his people through an everlasting promise.

This book is an attempt to help believers build their lives on a solid foundation. Genesis provides the beginning framework of how God created, called and cared for his people. As Christians understand the great legacy of God’s faithfulness to his people, they will understand that Israel’s story is ultimately their story as well. God’s people were built on a promise. That promise was fulfilled in the life, death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ. If Christians want to build their life on a solid foundation, they should start at the beginning. I pray that you will learn more of your foundation as you grow in your understanding of the history of God’s people. Build your life on a solid foundation. Build your life on the promise of God.

Biblical Thinking

Is the Bible still relevant? Does the Bible still speak to the issues of the day? Many say that the Bible is outdated and archaic. Are they right? Does God’s Word still matter?

Although it may be appealing to cultural sensibilities to question the Bible’s relevancy, God’s Word is the only thing that will always be relevant. Isaiah 40:6-8 states, “All flesh is grass, and all its beauty is like the flower of the field. The grass withers, the flower fades when the breath of the LORD blows on it; surely the people are grass. The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God will stand forever.” God’s Word will stand forever over and against the changing tides of cultural opinions.

Pastor David Kiehn explores critical issues in today’s society showing how God’s Word is still powerful and relevant today as it was in the beginning. The church needs to recover the abandoned Bible and trust God’s Word as we think through the critical issues of our day.

The Lord Calls Sinners

Sin is an inescapable part of our fallen human nature. We are all sinners. We all have messed up. How can we expect God to accept sinners? It is hard to believe that God calls sinners, but in Luke 19:10, that Jesus “came to seek and save the lost.” Jesus came to call sinners. Jesus came to save sinners. The beauty displayed in the gospel call is that it does far more than just save us from something, but saves us to something. Jesus Christ calls sinners to himself, then he uses those sinners on His mission to save other sinners. Through a series of biblical exhortations, Pastor David Kiehn shows how Jesus came to call sinners to God through Himself. Jesus Christ came to call sinners to salvation and on mission.

Forgiving Friend

Mark Twain writes, “Forgiveness is the fragrance that the violet sheds on the heel that has crushed it.” Forgiveness is one of the most beautiful and powerful aspects of our human experience. Although forgiveness is so beautiful, it also is extremely hard. If you have ever been severely wounded by a close friend or spouse, you know how difficult it is to extend forgiveness. The pain of forgiveness sometimes outweighs the pain of the wound, but without struggling through the painful process of forgiveness we will never experience true peace. Forgiveness is hard, but necessary. And because it is hard, we need faithful friends and need to be a faithful friend to encourage forgiveness when the wounds seem too deep to overcome.

The Apostle Paul provides a wonderful example of a forgiving friend. He steps into a very real conflict between two close friends with gracious words that encourage reconciliation. In the book of Philemon, God gives us a picture through the apostle Paul, of how real people should deal with real sin and work for real reconciliation in a community of real people. Pick up this book and be encouraged to become a forgiving friend for your good, the good of the others and the glory of God

Gaurd YOur Soul

The world is full of dangers. 1 Peter 5:8, “Be sober-minded, be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.” We must be aware of the dangers and actively guard our souls with the gospel of Jesus Christ.

Through a series of biblical exhortations, Pastor David Kiehn challenges people to guard their souls from the various dangers of this life and to hold fast to Jesus Christ.

“Oh, guard my soul, and deliver me! Let me not be put to shame, for I take refuge in you.” Psalm 25:22
