“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.” John 3:16
Dear Beloved,
Billy Graham passed away last week. He was a gracious and godly man who was passionate for the gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ. He was a man that was unique in his influence and impact for the kingdom of God. Many asked during his lifetime, “Who is going to be the next Billy Graham?” Well, the answer thus far is no one. He impacted paupers and presidents, the wealthy and the working class with the simply gospel message Jesus saves.
There are many reasons Christians should be thankful for Billy Graham. Here is why I am thankful:
Integrity – Billy Graham was a man of integrity and above reproach in how he guarded his life and ministry. Paul encouraged Timothy to keep a close watch on his life and doctrine and by so doing he would save both himself and his hearers. I am grateful how Billy Graham guarded his life and doctrine and led many to Christ as a result.
Simplicity – Billy Graham’s message was simple: Jesus saves through the cross. Every message, every article, every interview, every conversation led people to the cross. He had a singular focus to point people to the cross. We would do well to model his tenacious pursuit to proclaim the cross. His ministry heled to make John 3:16 the most recognized verse in America.
Charity – It has been said, “in essentials, unity; in doubtful matters, liberty; in all things, charity.” Billy Graham treated people with love and charity even if he disagreed on smaller matters. I believe doctrinal distinctives are important, but I am grateful how Graham encouraged unity and cooperation in the gospel across denominational lines.
Humility – Billy Graham was America’s pastor. He was the most well-known Christian in his generation. He preached to millions of people in his lifetime. He had the ear of the most famous celebrities and the most powerful leaders in the world. Although he had tremendous influence and worldwide fame, he was a humble servant of Jesus Christ. He did not desire the spotlight but used his spotlight to shine forth the gospel. He never forgot that he was sinner and served a great Savior.
By the time I started walking with the Lord Jesus Christ, Graham was winding down his ministry. I only saw a glimpse of his impact for the Lord Jesus Christ, but I am grateful for his work, his love, and his preaching of the Cross. May God raise up men and women across our world who love Jesus with integrity holding on to the simple gospel message that are charitable to those who disagree with them and with a humble and gracious hearts. May God raise up more godly servants for the glory of his name.
